The Earth Disappears
© 1988 Thomas Hemenway

†Since the dawn of man, a lonely world, a distant star, to be released,
but to understand, these only words, in a moment you'll feel the earth move.
Then there you were, in all that light, it seemed so strange,
so unlike you, and once again, to turn the globe,
I've seen you move as the earth moves.(as the earth moves.)

Falling and falling, the stars at my feet, I keep calling and calling, the earth disappears,
I keep flying and flying, away from our sun, for now trying and trying, to get back home.

Since those first few days, the world had known, it was so pure, so undestroyed,
but now we've seen what man has done, in 60 centuries.•
But to understand, these only words, In a moment to feel the earth change,
and once again, to turn the globe, into a garbage heap.

Rising and rising, the stars up above, I keep calling and calling the Lord of my life.†

I keep trying and trying,
the stars at my feet, for now calling and calling, the earth disappears.

Falling and falling, the stars at my feet, I keep calling and calling, the earth disappears,

but to understand.
